Steve Garrett - aim2 psychotherapist

'Steve helped me from making the biggest mistake of my life'

I've been interested in human performance and potential since my days in the Royal Air Force, where my own and fellow crew members' effectiveness was affected by different stresses and strains on a daily basis.  Those stresses and strains were commonly associated with environmental, physiological and communication issues.  In the worst case scenario accidents happen because of poor, or misdirected, human performance.  Following my time in the RAF I continued with this journey, literally travelling the world and becoming interested in Eastern philosophies, especially Buddhism: Buddha would today be the "master" therapist and workshop facilitator!  I'm still searching (it's a life-long task) but types of human suffering have not change in 2500 years, and nor have the causes and solutions.  I've spent 5 years now teaching and consulting on aviation safety matters, and at the same time qualified as a psychotherapist, counsellor, life coach and hypnotherapist.  You can find out more about me and aim2 here.

some basics

I like to focus on the client and offer the time and space for each client to express themselves in any way they wish and to talk about whatever comes to their mind. Assurance is given of complete confidentiality: that is any notes recorded will be stored safely, and apart from my own professional supervision no details of sessions are discussed outside of the therapy room, or used in any way other than for the benefit of the client.

My attitude is one of complete acceptance and non-judgement and I work with the client towards their own goals, whilst always conscious of what will be the most effective way of doing this.  Within the first one or two sessions I like to agree, with the client, a treatment programme; this will give some idea as to the number of sessions required, but does not have to be "set in stone" - we can remain flexible.  For some hypnotherapy treatments, the plan is simple and can be achieved in only one (extended) session.

type of psychotherapy offered

My training and qualification is in an "Integrative" therapy which combines many theories and models, including:

  • client-centered (Rogers)
  • psychodynamic (Freud, Jung etc)
  • gestalt (Perls)
  • CBT (Beck and Ellis)

Each client is different and they each deserve a therapist who will use the most effective tools to help them overcome, cope with, and/or understand their own life situation. Also, my style of therapy allows me to intervene and challenge to greater or lesser degrees - again depending on the client's own needs.  You can find out more about psychotherapy here.

typical psychotherapy sessions

Typically the first session(s) will be focused on the client's immediate pressing concerns, and this will usually centre on those heightened emotions that led them to seek help.  Client-centred and gestalt therapies are effective in helping these feelings to emerge.  For some clients this may be enough to re-balance their lives effectively and to put the spotlight on a previously hidden problem.  For others it is necessary to go back into their past and look for connections between past events, traumas and relationships and what is happening in the present.  Analysis of these connections is important in understanding, healing, forgiveness, acceptance and then moving forward. Psychodynamic therapy is most useful for uncovering and reinterpreting the past.  All clients are encouraged to look forward to the future and where possible set goals - some broad and some specific.  This is the final element of therapy, but the first step for many in becoming a new person and creating a better life for themselves.  Typically CBT, gestalt and coaching techniques will help in this final stage.

hypnotherapy

Clients who present for hypnotherapy will find my approach relaxing, direct and effective.  I do believe the most long-lasting and effective treatment results when the underlying causes of a client's issue are also investigated, uncovered and addressed, rather than temporarily dealing with immediate symptoms and covering-up the real problem.  Therefore clients can expect some counselling as well as hypnotherapy.  You can find out more about hypnotherapy here.
